5 Reasons Women Should Take Krav Maga

Krav Maga has a (well-earned) reputation for being one of the fiercest fighting styles there is. Not the beautiful form of classical martial arts, Krav is a system taught to military and police forces across the world for its simplicity and effectiveness. Sometimes, this can make it seem pretty intimidating. But Krav Maga is a great self-defense system, especially for women. Here’s why.

A Vital Life Skill

We all know the statistics: 1 in 3 women will suffer an assault within their lifetimes. And yet, women are rarely – if ever – taught how to effectively defend themselves. Krav Maga is a modern system designed specifically to be simple to learn, and to make the most of instinctive movements. It doesn’t take years to learn the basics. In just a few classes, women can pick up the tools to help them in dangerous real-life situations.

Beyond Boxing

Krav incorporates movements from boxing, kickboxing, and Muay Thai to ensure that students can defend themselves with hands, feet, elbows, and knees, keeping their balance and allowing a quick escape. But sometimes, especially for women, the fight happens on the ground or on furniture. For this reason, Krav also borrows from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, incorporating ground escapes that are effective even against larger opponents.

A Warrior’s Mindset

Women are socialized to be adept at de-escalating tense situations, but rarely taught how to prepare themselves mentally to defend themselves with force. Not only does Krav Maga teach a no-quit mental toughness through challenging drills, but by practising self-defense situations, women better understand their stress response and learn to channel it into effective defensive techniques.

Confidence

For many women, the idea of being attacked is so frightening that they prefer not to think about it at all.  It’s understandable, but it creates a vicious cycle: avoiding thinking about it means never coming up with a plan that might save your life. Learning a skill like Krav Maga not only makes students physically stronger, but it builds a huge amount of confidence, too. When you have a plan for the worst case scenario – and you’ve practised it – the fear of the unknown shrinks.

A Community of Badasses

In a women’s Krav Maga class, you know you’re with people who get it: the nervousness of never having thrown a punch before; the reality that you may have to defend yourself at some point; and the struggle of working against a lifetime of being told to be nice at all times. Because we get it, the atmosphere is friendly, accepting, and welcoming. We support you in letting out your inner badass, and help you build your confidence as you grow your fitness and skill.

Designed to be easy to learn, instinctive, and practical, Krav Maga is an ideal form of self-defense for women. At MNBJJ, we make sure you feel supported and have fun while learning a skill that may someday save your life.
